RESEARCH FILM POSTERS: THE 1950'S

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

One thing is clear about the film posters of the 1950's, text was king! As you can see big bold lettering dominates these classic 1950's posters. In addition to this focus on text you could say that in the 1950's, the film poster was still somewhat a work of art, at least in most cases hand painted work was favoured over the more graphic image. The Saul Bass-Style graphic poster became popular toward the end of the 50's as he began to gain notoriety but didn't become prevalent until the 1960's and 70's.
