RESEARCH: FILM POSTERS: FILM NOIR: AMERICAN NOIR

As i'm focusing on film noir for my dissertation I thought that I would have a look at some film noir posters from the 1950's and 60's. I picked out mainly American Noir classics and a couple of french, Italian alternatives as well. Some of the themes in Noir cinema include, high and low camera angles, heavy use of dark and light, close ups, and reoccurring characters and settings. Some of the characters typically found in film noir pictures include the hard-boiled detective, femme fatale, the victim and the crooked police chief. Some of these characters are present on a lot of these poster examples, most notably the femme fatale.

Metropolis and Rififi are the two poster examples that stray from the usual suspects like The Maltese Falcon and Perdition.

Maltese Falcon (1941)

Double Indemnity (1944)

Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)

Asphalt Jungle (1950)

The Big Heat (1953)
